  1. Opening the communication channels within your business is key to developing great systems development practices. Workflow process mapping is an excellent tool for opening communication between individuals and different functional groups to ensure that the systems being developed are solving the “right” problem(s). None of us is as smart as all of us!
  2. Does your team know your business processes well enough to describe them simply? When you perform a work process often, it almost becomes like “muscle memory” and while you may be focused on task efficiency, you will start to lose the macro view of “why” the process exists. A documented process is a great reference for the entire company.
  3. Where in my company should I develop this workflow mapping skill set? A well documented workflow has many critical uses within your business. Deciding “which” functional group should be responsible can be challenging. A systems development team can be a great place to develop this skill and will force them to talk with others about how things work and how to make them “better.”
